In 2001, a visit to Mae Hong Son, Northern Thailand brought us to the so-called Giraffe Long-Neck Karen Tribe Women. Supposedly there were around 600 of these refugees from Myanmar (Burma), residing in three villages open to visitors. The Kayan group of Karreni people were ethnic minorities, and were now bound to live as tourist attractions, with wire coils around the women’s necks. They are a beautiful and kind people, as we see the children in an open-air school, doing what kids do best. In late 2008, many young women entering the camp now, are removing their rings in protest, and they are fighting to be able to resettle in other countries.
